"I have been homeless...I lived in 17 different residential placements before I was 17 years old...without Presbyterian Homes, I don’t know where I would be today."
James came to the Children's Home at 17, quiet, shy, and not believing he could succeed. Well he did! He graduated with his GED, moved to our independent living home, enrolled in college and found a job for the weekends. This happened because we made him an offer he couldn’t refuse: If he worked hard, we would help him go to college. With parents that suffer from chronic illness and no stable home to offer, James never considered higher education an option. He now knows that dreams can come true.
Independent Living is a residential program designed to meet the developmental needs of young adults ages 18-21. Occupying two houses on our Lynchburg Campus, our Independent Living Program offers guidance while the young adults learn the skills necessary for a successful future. We teach important life skills, such as budgeting for rent payments, cooking, time management, learning about insurance and buying a first car. We nourish their spirits, offering opportunities to grow and mature within an environment of structure and accountability.
For Referral Sources: The purpose of Independent Living services is to provide a transitional living program to serve young adults as they transition between group care and/or family care to independence.
