Who owns & operates the Presbyterian Homes & Family Services, Inc. Children's Home?
Founded on Christian faith, PHFS is a registered Internal Revenue Service Code Section 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. PHFS is a public charity and contributions qualify as tax deductible.
Who is eligible to receive help?
Over 100 years ago, this ministry began as an orphanage in
Lynchburg, Virginia. We have since grown to serve
• at-risk children ages 2 through 17,
• adults with mental retardation, and
• their families.
Our clients come from the mid-Atlantic region. We do not
discriminate against gender, race, politics and faith.
What services are available?
We strive to meet the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of our clients through a range of services including emergency shelter, traditional residential and therapeutic group care, day school, and independent living services.
How is the Home funded?
We rely on state funding and the generosity of churches, foundations, businesses and past and present donors to meet the needs of those in our care. We are thankful to the Lord our God for the support we receive from each of these sources.
What are the reasons children and families need help?
• In Virginia, about 85,000 boys and girls have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder caused by violence they have endured or witnessed.
• Over 1,600 mentally challenged adults in Virginia re on a
waiting list for Medicaid Waivers. Those without support often
live on the streets or in terrible conditions.
• Children make up a large and growing portion of the homeless
population. The average age of a homeless person in the U.S. is 9
years old.
How many individuals and families does Presbyterian Homes help each year?
Since our beginning in 1903 we have served over 10,000 youth and adults. This year, we will help over 500 individuals and their families turn their lives around by breaking the cycle of abuse and gaining new skills to achieve success in life.
How long does an individual usually stay at the Home?
There is no maximum length of stay for our Adult Program – once we accept an individual into this program, he or she is eligible to spend a lifetime with us. Our Children’s Program accommodates youth ages 2 to 18; however, should a client choose to pursue under-graduate or graduate studies, Presbyterian Homes will provide support for the duration.
