Partnership for the Prevention of Substance Abuse

This program brings together Lynchburg City, Amherst County, Campbell County and Appomattox County to create cooperative prevention efforts to reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and reduce high school drop-out rates to ensure success for our youth. Research shows that alcohol and drugs are primary risk factors that can lead to truancy and other school performance issues, as well as crime. The Partnership for the Prevention of Substance Abuse works to teach children and teens the necessary skills to build a better future.

This program focuses on the following efforts:

  • In-School Programming
    • LifeSkills Training is the primary curriculum that addresses the impact substance abuse has on the academic and personal goals of each student, as well as the skills to resist peer pressure.
    • LifeSkills Training is offered at 10 Central Virginia middle schools
    • The program reaches more than 1000 middle schoolers each year
    • Our staff is also certified in Project Towards No Drug Abuse, Say It Straight, and Teens, Crime and the Communit
  • Parental Involvement
    • Parents are engaged at every opportunity through Family Fun Nights, as funding allows
  • Leadership in Community Collaboration
    • Coordination of "Just Say No to Drugs" Day in partnership with the Lynchburg Hillcats and the Gain Independence from Tobacco and Other Drugs (GIFTS) coalition
    • Membership in the Lynchburg City School's Health Advisory Board
    • Membership in Lynchburg Safe Schools Committee
    • Region 2000 Crime Prevention Task Force
